National Institute of Solar Energy

National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) is the Apex National R&D Institution in the field of Solar Energy and an autonomous institution of Ministry of New and Renewable (MNRE). The 25 year old Solar Energy Centre (SEC) under MNRE was converted to an autonomous institution in September, 2013 to assist the Ministry in implementing the National Solar Mission and to coordinate research, technology and other related works.

NISE is involved in demonstration, standardization, interactive research, training and testing solar technologies and systems. It is an effective interface between the Government and institutions, industry & user organizations for development, promotion and widespread utilization of solar energy in the country.

NISE is maintaining a NABL accredited Solar Photovoltaic module testing laboratory, lighting system test laboratory, battery testing facility and a water pumping system test rig and outdoor test facilities. The centre has fully developed testing facility for small and large size solar thermal systems and Solar Resource Assessment. It has a 1 MW solar thermal R&D power project that was implemented in collaboration with IIT, Bombay.

Mission

National Institute of Solar Energy as an apex institute of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in the area of solar energy is undertaking activities related to research & development, testing, certification, standardization, skill development, resource assessment and awareness in the field of solar energy and associated technologies

Vision
  • To establish itself as one of the world’s leading Institute in the field of Solar Energy through Research & Development, Testing, Certification and Evaluation, Economics and Policy Planning
  • To emerge as a center committed to the development, utilization and demonstration of solar energy related technologies for various applications
  • To develop itself as a school for human resources development, offering training and other services at various levels by adopting/practicing latest techniques in the area of engineering and science related to applications / utilization of solar energy
  • To emerge as a premier referral center in the area of solar energy technologies through active collaborations with prominent international organizations and also as a center committed to showcase the history of evolution of solar energy technologies in the world.

Departments of NISE

Solar Photovoltaic

Solar photovoltaic division at National Institute of solar energy (NISE) focuses on sustainable development of photovoltaic technologies by Evaluation of Technical, Environmental, and Economic performance, cooperation with institutions and industry, testing and standardization. One of the major functions is coordination with Regional Test Centers (RTCs) and Standards Organizations.

NISE PV Test Facility

The Photovoltaic testing facility at National institute of solar energy is an independent test laboratory and engaged in testing of solar PV module, systems BOS and components as per national and international standards. In order to accomplish these activities PVTF is having 3 different laboratories i.e. PV module testing lab, advanced SPV systems & lighting lab and battery test lab.

Solar Thermal Technology

National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) has undertaken interactive research with a number of national/International research institutions/Organizations& Industries. Institute has setup state-of-the-art Solar Thermal Technologies for different end use applications such as power generation, air-conditioning, cold storage, process heat, desalination, cooking, space heating, hot water etc.

Skill Development and Consultancy

“Skilling India” is the flagships program of the PMO targeting to create 500 million skilled man-powers by 2020. Renewable energy is one of these targeted sectors, and National Institute of Solar Energy, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy is assigned with the responsibility to execute the various skill development programs throughout the country in the field of renewable energy technology. At present various programs are being conducted at NISE its partner institutes across India.

Solar Radiation Resource Assessment

Solar Radiation Resource Assessment (SRRA) is a mission mode program launched by MNRE in 2010, setting the world’s largest network of ground solar radiation measurement stations at various locations in the country. The program aims to fill the void for the availability of investor grade quality solar radiation data in the country crucial for designing and implementation of solar power projects.
